"A young couples first time, on the eve of the end of the world"
Lightning and rain crashed around the young couple as they sat together on the edge of a cliff. They looked out at the rising ocean before them. News reports heralded the end of the world, the skies would fall and the oceans would swallow the land. No one had believed it until it started happening and then the world had fallen into chaos. People were afraid, trying to escape the inevitable. The young couple sat peacefully amidst the chaos of the weather, enjoying their last moments together.
The young man looked at the woman next to him and smiled shyly at her. She returned the smile and placed her hand gently on his thigh. She leaned into him and rested her head on his shoulder.
“What do you suppose happens now?” She asked him. The young man shrugged, unsure what to say. He lifted his hand to run it through her hair and she snuggled closer to him.
“What can we do? The world is ending, as they said it would. It’s not like we can get one them spaceships the rich people got. I guess we just wait.”
The couple sat in silence as they watched the water coming closer. There used to be a city in the valley below them. The man wondered if they would be here now if the world wasn’t ending. Tonight was the last night the earth would exist. Tomorrow the sun would explode and anyone left would burn to death. He shivered at the thought. It wasn’t pleasant to know how you’d die.
“Let’s do something.” He said suddenly. The woman looked up at him from where she was still leaning against him.
“What do you wanna do?” The man looked around and shrugged.
“There is one thing I’ve always wanted to do…” He trailed off looking at her. She shifted so she was sitting directly in front of him before he continued, “I always wanted to go sky diving.”
“And where are you going to get a parachute to do that? Let alone anyone to fly the plane?” She laughed as she spoke. The absurdity of it such a contrast to the constant thought of the end of the world.
“Who said anything about a parachute?” She looked at him shocked. It never occurred to her that he had meant it like that.
“The world is ending tomorrow and I’d rather die having fun. Don’t you think?” she looked at him sceptically before a smile spread across her face. He was right, why couldn’t they choose how it was going to end?
“Okay. But, it’s my first time.”
“Mine too.”
